Panel and Seam Choices for the North Country

For Clinton, Franklin, Essex, and St. Lawrence county roofs, the default specification worth starting from is: double-lock mechanical seam, 24-gauge painted steel or Galvalume, quality PVDF finish, concealed clips, over the full snow-country eave assembly. Every departure from that default should have a stated reason.

This page explains each term so a quote reads like information rather than vocabulary, and so the trade-offs a price reflects are visible before you sign.

Seam profiles: the three locks

  • Double-lock mechanical. The panel edges fold twice, roughly 180 degrees, and a seaming tool closes them in the field. The second fold adds a weatherproofing layer against standing and backed-up water, the exact condition an ice dam creates, and the closed seam accommodates thermal movement across a minus-30-to-90-degree annual swing. This is the snow-country standard and the profile to assume for shallow pitches, complex roofs, and the deep-pack interior towns.
  • Snap-lock. Panel edges press together over a concealed clip, no field seaming. Faster and cheaper on labor, respectable on steeper and simpler roofs that shed well, and a legitimate value choice there. Its limit is standing water resistance: it sheds weather rather than sealing against backup.
  • Single-lock. One fold, seamed once. A middle step seen less often in residential quotes; where it appears, ask why it beat the double-lock for the specific roof.

Gauge: what the number buys

Gauge runs backwards: lower is thicker. The step from 26-gauge to 24-gauge steel buys resistance to denting from ice chunks and dropped branches, less oil-canning across flat pans, and more composure under snow load. On an outbuilding with a budget ag-panel roof, 26-gauge is a fair economy. On a primary home buying a 40-to-70-year covering, 24-gauge is the North Country answer, and a quote that drops to 26 to hit a number should say so out loud.

Steel, Galvalume, aluminum

Painted galvanized steel and Galvalume (steel with an aluminum-zinc coating) are the inland defaults: hard, load-bearing, economical, and long-lived under a quality finish. Aluminum will not red-rust and owns the salt-air coast, but it is softer, dents easier, and costs more, trading away exactly the toughness this region's design condition rewards. Unless a site has a specific corrosion exposure, steel-family panels win here.

Finish, clips, and the parts nobody sees

A premium PVDF paint finish holds color and keeps the hard, smooth surface that sheds snow for decades; economy finishes chalk and fade sooner. Concealed clips matter beyond weatherproofing: they let panels float through thermal expansion instead of stressing fasteners. Is snap-lock standing seam a mistake in the North Country?

Not automatically. On steeper, simpler roofs that shed well, a quality snap-lock system with the full eave assembly underneath performs respectably and installs faster. The mistake is defaulting to it where backed-up meltwater is likely: shallow pitches, complex geometry, deep-pack interior towns. There, the double-lock mechanical seam earns its labor cost.

What is oil-canning and should I worry about it?

Oil-canning is the visible waviness that can appear in flat panel areas. It is cosmetic, not a failure, but heavier 24-gauge panels, striations or minor ribs, and proper installation reduce it substantially. If a quote jumps to 26-gauge to hit a price, oil-canning risk is part of what was traded away.

Steel or aluminum for the North Country?

Steel, usually. Painted galvanized or Galvalume steel is harder, carries snow load with less denting, and costs less. Aluminum's advantage is corrosion resistance in salt air, a coastal issue this inland region rarely faces. The exception case is a specific corrosion exposure, not a general preference.

Do panel color and finish matter under snow?

Finish more than color. A quality PVDF paint system keeps the smooth, hard, low-friction surface that sheds snow and resists fade and chalk over decades. Color choice is aesthetic; in this climate no color meaningfully changes ice-dam behavior compared to the assembly underneath it.
