What an ice dam actually is
An ice dam is refrozen meltwater. Heat escaping into the attic warms the upper roof deck and melts the underside of the snowpack. The meltwater runs down under the snow until it reaches the eave, which hangs past the warm house and stays at air temperature, and refreezes there, building a dam that pools water behind it.
The pooled water is the damage mechanism. Roof coverings are built to shed flowing water, not to hold standing water, and the pool works uphill under shingles, through fastener holes, into the deck edge, and eventually into walls and ceilings. What a metal roof genuinely does about it
Three things, each specific and physical:
- It sheds the fuel. Ice dams need a snowpack to melt. Smooth, hard, painted standing seam panels release snow readily, so on most slopes the pack slides off in manageable amounts before it can sit, consolidate, and feed a melt cycle. Asphalt's rough, granular surface grips the pack all season.

What a metal roof does not do
A metal roof does not stop your attic from leaking heat, and attic heat is the engine of every ice dam. Install beautiful panels over a warm, unsealed, unventilated attic and the melt cycle continues: snow still melts from below, water still runs to the cold eave, and ice can still build, especially in valleys, behind dormers, and on low-slope sections that shed poorly.
Any contractor who sells metal as an automatic end to ice dams is overclaiming, and the overclaim has a cost: homeowners skip the attic work, keep the symptom, and blame the roof. - Ventilation second. A continuous soffit-to-ridge path keeps whatever heat still escapes from warming the deck.
- The covering and membrane when the roof is due. If your asphalt roof is mid-life and sound, do steps one and two now and bank the difference.
